Chromies vs. Phonies

On Breeders’ Cup Saturday at Santa Anita, do you think there were more Chromies or Phonies (people who made all their bets by phone instead of standing in line)? Geo-location is going to be a major battle between tracks and the ADWs, and not just in California.

The Stronach Group has announced that Grammy Award-winner Christopher Cross (“Arthur’s Theme”, “Sailing”) will headline the Pegasus World Cup halftime show at Gulfstream Park on January 28.

The national anthem that day will be sung by American Idol Season #7 4th-runner-up Kelly Holland and Ken Bone will give the traditional “Riders Up!” in the paddock for the $12 million main event.

As nauseating a choice as it was between Clinton and Trump, it’s just the opposite when it comes to California Chrome and Arrogate. In our opinion, they both deserve to be Horse of the Year, in addition to their individual titles.

If they should both suit up for the Pegasus, and it looks like they will at the moment, it won’t matter who fills out the other 10 stalls.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Gov. Brown named a full-time horseplayer to fill the vacant CHRB seat? Kate Upton would be our second choice.

In case you missed it, in his column this week Tom Jicha connected the dots between Churchill Downs announcing a couple of races in Japan would produce at least one guaranteed starting berth in next year’s Run for the Roses and the fact Japan has a rule that there cannot be wagering on an international race unless there is at least one Japanese runner.

He points out the Japanese bet about $40 million on this year’s Arc, while the globally- storied Derby could attract double that.

By the way, CDI has raised prices on both the 2017 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks days.

Every morning, millions of Americans are waking up, wiping the sleep from their eyes, brushing their teeth and realizing November 8 wasn’t just a dream.

All parties have agreed to call the infield fly rule on Paulickreport.com pop-up jokes.

The word "Stable" certainly takes on a double meeting when you're talking about the situation in Northern California.

Michael Wrona is terrific, but it’s great to at least still have Trevor Denman calling Del Mar. Don’t hold for your breath for a Trevor Denman Day at Santa Anita anytime soon.
